Wednesday 8th November 2006, at Posticum in Oradea, The Coalition for NGO SecToR Consolidation in Bihor County held a debate regarding the launching of the STRONG Coalition, its mission and purpose, as well as the long and medium term objectives. Eleven nongovernmental organizations from Bihor County have associated in the coalition.
One month ago The Coalition for NGO SecToR Consolidation in Bihor County (STRONG) has been established, having as members 11 foundations and associations from Bihor County (Ruhama Foundation, Romanian Foundation for Children, Community and Family FRCCF, Albin Foundation, Caritas Catolica Association etc.) and other 5 supporters. The goal of the coalition is to provide expertise in the social sector’s domains for consultation, elaboration, adjustment and implementation of the social policies at local, county or even national level. The members are looking to strengthen relationships with public administration to influence the decisions concerning disfavoured people. In Bihor, there are 129 social services provided by 90 associations and foundations – private providers of social services. „NGOs have been created because it was a real need for them”, has explained Lucia Ciobanu, president of Down Association. To support this idea, the coalition’s members presented case studies of people who’s lives have improved through the support offered by NGOs. „The people who come to us are true fighters. We had many cases when young people with disabilities have been supported to enroll in universities”, has explained Nicolae Rusu, president of Locomotor Disabled Association Bihor. In the same context, Ioana Ciobanu, diagnosed with Down syndrome, has told the audience about her motivational speeches held to various events in Europe, especially organized for people suffering from the same syndrome. „I got at home seven medals and I became a world messenger of Special Olympics”, said Ioana.
